Most botanical skincare extracts come from the visible parts of a plant — the leaf, the root, the petal. We were interested in something else: the phytoplacenta, the innermost growth tissue where the flower's own cellular regeneration begins. This is where the plant's most biologically active material lives. And it is notoriously difficult to isolate.
Rather than harvesting from the field — where climate, soil, and season all introduce variability — Talitha Koum spent three years developing a proprietary cell culture process. Phytoplacenta cells are cultivated in controlled laboratory conditions: temperature, humidity, nutrients, and light all precisely calibrated. The result is an active of consistent potency, batch after batch.
In clinical testing, the extract supported two proteins that sensitised skin is often deficient in: Filaggrin, which helps the skin hold moisture and resist irritants, and AQP3, which governs how water moves through the skin's deeper layers. It also demonstrated measurable reduction of inflammation triggered by UV exposure, alongside protection against blue light, oxidative stress, and pollution.
